Here's to our Breast Cancer Baddie Mommas:
BREAST CANCER BADDIE: A WOMAN OF COLOR AFFECTED BY BREAST CANCER.
For the Breast of Us is the first online community dedicated to all women of color (minority women). We exist to amplify our unique narratives and imagery and help women make the rest of their lives the best of their lives following a breast cancer diagnosis. In honor of the Baddie Mommas we love, lost and live for, we’re sharing resources to better support mommas on their breast cancer journey and information regarding some of the challenges they face as women of color affected by breast cancer.
The Disparities
African American Women
Are, on average, 40% more likely to die from the disease than white women with breast cancer. And are two times more likely than white women in the U.S. to develop triple negative breast cancer, which is associated with a poorer prognosis.
Hispanic Women
Are more likely than non-Hispanic white women to be diagnosed with tumors that are larger and are hormone receptor-negative, both of which are more difficult to treat.
Asian/Pacific Islander Women
Have seen their incidence of breast cancer increasing steadily.
The Barriers
These barriers to quality healthcare are just the tip of the iceberg.
Medical Mistrust
Poor Communication
Implicit Bias
Income Inequality
Racial Discordance
Cultural Differences
